If, due to: 1) senseless Republican intransigence or 2) Biden’s stubborn refusal to negotiate, there is a default on the federal government debt, your party affiliation won’t matter. Economic and financial market chaos is a completely non-partisan condition, and one that we’ve never seen before. Any investments you have, any government bonds or bond funds you own, any money you have coming from Uncle Sam, will lose value, be delayed, or become worthless either briefly or, if nothing changes in the current situation, for an extended period. It’s not worth the academic exercise to find out which economic theory is correct.
Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat or neither, call your Congressperson and tell them to sign on as a co-sponsor to H.R. 415, Rep. Bill Foster’s bill to eliminate the debt ceiling and end this ridiculous and unnecessary discussion permanently. Then, if you think the government spends too much on things it shouldn’t spend so much on, tell your Rep. what you think should be cut and why. If you think some programs should be strengthened, tell them that too. Either way, make it clear that, as far as you are concerned, paying for bills already due and deciding what to buy in the future are two different things and need to remain separate. Punishing current citizens and taxpayers for the financial transgressions of past Congresses is politically nonsensical and economically disastrous.
The debt ceiling is ridiculous. I agree with your sentiments.
The time to debate budgets is at budget time. I noticed that the President offered one. Hearing crickets from the GQP.
