If we’re serious 021025
About opposistance (a great word coined by Bob Morgan; because it's more than just opposition or resistance)
And we have to be, or this whole experiment will have lost its purpose. Robert Hubbell, in yesterday’s Today’s Edition, presented his vision of a People’s Cabinet or Shadow Cabinet that would provide an organized focal point in the regular political world for those of us who don’t accept and aren’t complicit in the fascist coup being undertaken by Felon47 and his associates/handlers. You can read the whole letter here:
but the personnel list is pretty impressive and would have some impact if it was pursued actively and would also give all of the individuals and groups currently begging us for money somewhere to concentrate their efforts and expenses. While this is coming together, every time Mump, Trusk, Vought, Miller, or any of the other MAGAts makes a public statement, comment, or appearance, some recognizable Democrat must make a counter appearance on the same or a very similar media platform with an answering statement. That means, for outlets like Fox News, someone with the proven ability to take the flak and hand it right back will have to answer the call – Pete Buttigieg, Liz Cheney, Chris Murphy, AOC, there are a few others, while more normal media can be handled by those who need more practice. The point is to prevent the media from contacting and highlighting Democrats whose performance can be used to denigrate the effort and generate talking points of which there are already enough.
“The newly elected DNC Chair, Ken Martin, should be in the shadow cabinet, though I don’t believe he should lead it. We can’t start with the negative perception that a central committee controlled by “party insiders” is the face of the loyal opposition.” I disagree here, Martin should be the Chief of Staff of the Cabinet and coordinate all of the activities in the same way that the DNC should be coordinating the Party’s efforts to take back Congress in 2026 and the Presidency in 2028. Like it or not, the Democratic Party is the only organization that has ballot access in all voting areas and we’re not likely to have a viable replacement before the election season begins again.
· On the shadow cabinet:
· Hakeem Jeffries—Minority Leader, House
· Not Chuck Schumer—Minority Leader, Senate (Klobuchar?) Maybe Sen. Klobuchar, but he’s absolutely right that Schumer needs to go. Now. Call the Senate caucus together in a closed-door session and don’t come out until they’ve selected someone who will actively lead a determined and focused opposition to everything the MAGAts propose. If the decision is to retain Sen. Schumer, he’ll need to come out snarling instead of mewing.
· Pete Buttigieg – Transportation, Fox designated hitter My choice for Secretary of State in the next Democratic administration so he has some additional gravitas in preparation for his Presidential run
· Elizabeth Warren—Social Security, Medicare
· Gretchen Whitmire—Education
· Alexandria Ocasio Cortez—Oversight
· Jamie Raskin—DOJ
· Ben Wikler—Grassroots Coordinator
· Amy Klobuchar—Foreign Relations / Secretary of State
· Gavin Newsom—Healthcare, Fox designated hitter
· Rafael Warnock—Appropriations, OMB
· Katie Porter— Consumer Protection, banking
· Tammy Duckworth—Defense
· Brian Schatz—EPA, Interior
· Chris Murphy--Labor
· Elissa Slotkin—Domestic intelligence, FBI counterpart
· Adam Schiff— Foreign intelligence, CIA, DNI, NSA
The qualifications of these people compared to their counterparts in the current administration are painfully obvious and, while they won’t necessarily step into those roles in a new administration a la Britain, they would at minimum lay a quality foundation for whoever does take them. It would be an effective counter to what the Heritage Foundation did with Project 2025, done publicly and transparently and actually responsive to the desires of the majority of the American people. There is beaucoup hopefulness here, and I’m realistic enough to recognize that it might not come to complete fruition, but one of the biggest risks that we face in opposing the Trumpista coup is that people will tire of daily phone calls, public demonstrations, and office visits with no visible return on the emotional and energy investment. In the meantime, call, text, write and visit your legislators at all levels and let them and the Judges who are currently showing the most courageous resistance to the illegal and often unconstitutional actions of the administration know that we’re “mad as hell, and we aren’t going to take it any more.”
Yes to the shadow cabinet. I called my senators (one of whom is Elizabeth Warren) yesterday to back the idea. But we can't tell the media which Democrat to call; we can only make it clear who will be prepared to answer the call knowledgeably. And, sadly, we can't prevent other Democrats from trying to steal the limelight. Will Rogers was right when he declared, "I belong to no organized political party. I am a Democrat." Still true.
Absolutely agree with a People's cabinet. And it makes perfect sense that the DNC lead the charge. If not, who or what? I am not sure Ken Martin has the chutzpah for this. But I was thrilled to see David Hogg become vice chair. It is time for younger people to drive the bus.
The future will be determined by who can be the loudest and most compelling on social media. That will come from someone of David's generation.
