I posted this bit in response to Robert Hubbell’s “Chaos” episode of Today’s Edition.
In respect of your closing comments today, I strongly suggest that everyone read Jerry Weiss's piece at https://jerryweiss.substack.com/?utm_source=global-search. Jerry offers several measures of hope in a reasoned presentation along with some contact numbers for potential action.
Since it's pretty clear that neither Trump nor Musk has the brains to come up with that nuanced a plan for the budget, one wonders who is really driving the conversation. Regardless, calls to Congresspeople in both parties are in order, if for no other reason than to reassure those who are gerrymandered into longevity have more to fear from the impact of a government shutdown than any putative primary challenge that is at least two years away and would be driven by the lamest duck President I've ever seen. One also wonders how much of this is driven by a desire on the part of the two most public clowns to keep the spotlight focused on them instead of silly things like major religious holidays, the joy of children getting gifts of love from friends and family, and the benefits we all derive from a season nominally focused on our common humanity and the teachings of love and respect for each other as God's creations.
Wouldn't it be nice if Congress stopped getting a paycheck when the government shuts down? Sadly, the Constitution set it up so they are paid no matter what. And sadly, they have terrific health insurance regardless of what happens to their constituents.
