Wouldn't it be nice if Congress stopped getting a paycheck when the government shuts down? Sadly, the Constitution set it up so they are paid no matter what. And sadly, they have terrific health insurance regardless of what happens to their constituents.

Actually, the continuance of Congressional and staff payroll is something our legislators cooked up, it's not in the Constitution. If they, and the people who do the actual work for them, had to forgo compensation while the government was on hiatus, there'd be none of this silliness even though the millionaire members could probably afford to live on their outside income for at least a couple of weeks.
